I am slowly losing my mind over the shift towards video as the default media format.

I do not find this to be an efficient way to absorb information. I am bored and distracted by the time the largely unnecessary introduction is over. I can't use ctrl+f to find the specific information I'm looking for. If there are instructions to follow, I don't want to have to constantly pause and back up to the part I need.

At least give me a fucking transcript.

With the exception of my favorite ever Anon who apparently thought I was French, I think a lot or most people who follow me know that I’m a lawyer in the US.

A lot of my friends are federal employees. A few of my friends are federal prosecutors. One of my friends prosecuted January 6th cases.

My group text with my friends from law school is a very bleak place right now. I am sad and angry and scared.

But I don’t intend to change anything about my tumblr. I know a lot of you, like me, come to tumblr for a break from The Horrors. And we come to look at pretty pictures and laugh at shitposts and talk about our blorbos. And then we put down our phones or close the browser tab and go out and do what we can in this rapidly deteriorating hellscape.

I found the beginning of the most recent episode of Vibe Check to have some useful perspective. The hosts were talking about how your outrage has value and how the current president is an outrage-machine who is banking on us burning out to diminish resistance. I recommend this podcast in general but this episode in particular.

So that’s what I’m doing. My blog will continue to not have politics or news on it. It’s not because I’m not following or because I don’t care. I am and I do. I’m just not doing that on tumblr. I have asks open, at least for now, and DMs are always open. You’re welcome to stop by and say hi.

I have a bookstagram, and I recently followed someone because they posted about the overconsumption issue that most bookish social media seems to have. Today, though, they posted another controversial "opinion": that listening to audiobooks isn't reading, and people who claim to have read a bunch of books that they listened to as audiobooks are lying and/or deluded. Listening to audiobooks, she said, is just consuming books.

I disagreed in a fairly politely worded reply, and I intend to unfollow/block, because I find it unlikely this person will change their mind, especially since I'm far from the only person to point out that this is exclusionary and ableist. But this is tumblr/my house, and now I'm going to be as blunt as I want to be.

I'm a librarian and archivist. So much of the work I and others in my field do focuses on making books and reading more accessible and less exclusionary. It is, in fact, incredibly ableist to negate how important audiobooks are for people who have certain disabilities or challenges, and I would in no universe say they aren’t reading. For that matter, a busy person who only has time for audiobooks and for people who just prefer them--it still counts, as far as I'm concerned.

See, there's a difference between an audiobook and a podcast or long song or radio program. An audiobook is still a book--it was written with a particular narrative structure, and the author plays a defined but limited role (once the book is written, it's written; the author isn't tuning in next episode with comments and corrections based on what listeners said). An audiobook is a book, ergo, listening to one is reading. Using braille is reading, and listening to audiobooks is reading.

The part that has me in full Captain Raymond Holt "apparently that is a trigger for me" mode is that this bookstagrammer called listening to audiobooks consumption. In the context of her other posts about overconsumption as an issue in the bookish community (again, agree, but also...mind your own business), this seems particularly insidious to me. Conflating influencer-driven (and capitalist hellscape) consumption with listening to an audiobook (again, a massive boon for the visually impaired and those with disabilities like ADHD, dyslexia, etc.) is rude at best and dangerously exclusionary at worst. Stop letting comparison be the thief of joy; mind your own business and stop looking at the pages that bother you. Focus on the kindness of leaning towards inclusion, meeting people where they are, and leaving judgment behind.*

*This person also said "feel free to comment if you disagree but please don't be mean or judgmental," as if they hadn't just posted the most ableist and judgmental sludge I've seen today.

Happy 2025 to all of you following this account. It's you who keeps us going, and for that, we are forever grateful.

2024 was a big year for us, as it saw the first edition of Women of Noise Fest last September in my hometown, Chattanooga. You'll surely be happy to know that Women of Noise Fest 2025 will also be happening. I'm still working out the details as of now (venues and other logistical matters), but the goal is to make it a three-day event this year. As previously stated, this is a PRIVATELY CURATED festival, so please don't flood our inbox with requests!

What else can be expected from Women of Noise this year? More podcast interviews will be recorded and more print interviews will be posted on our website. The third edition of our Zine will likely come out. There might be a few additional charity compilations; nothing is set in stone yet. Fingers crossed, there will be some coverage of a few other music fests and special events.

One thing I can guarantee is that myself and the other mods are going to stay spicy and not take bullshit from anyone. This account is for noisy women and run BY noisy women. This is a platform for women and girls and femmes to scream and squawk and beep-boop without male scrutiny, and always will be.

Stay tuned for more goodies. Eat your veggies, drink water, brush your teeth, watch your levels, and don't blow up your overdrive pedal like I did (seriously, it caught on fire). i am a helanie fan until the day i die and i believe helen distortion deserves good things for no particular reason. but i cannot deny how entertaining it would be if they were exes. like imagine you're an abnormally tall being of pure delusion and deception dating a short angry girl but the second she finds inner peace she leaves you. for a podcaster, nonetheless.

and then the apocalypse starts and like sure, you're enjoying all the people you get to torture, but like...you kind of miss her. and then you find out her and her new girl started a cult and they're possibly the happiest couple in this hellscape. i would simply open a door directly into my own grave
